Remove DRM From Your Tunes

February 22, 2007 by randomwalk

[From PC World magazine]
Apple’s iTunes, MTV’s Urge, and similar online stores take the pain out of buying music, but the embedded digital rights management technology in the songs adds a new headache, limiting where you can play them and how often. Some apps strip out DRM by cracking the encryption, but that tends to be illegal. Achieve the same ends with the following.

  1. Create a new playlist with all the songs you’d like to rip.
  2. Use your software’s Burn Disc option to copy the music to audio-CD format.
  3. After you’ve burned the music to disc, rename the originally downloaded song to something like “My Sharona-iTunes DRM.”
  4. Insert your newly burned CD-R and click Import CD to copy the songs back into iTunes or whichever player app you originally used. They will now be stripped of all DRM.

Earn Money from Your Brilliant Ideas

January 23, 2007 by randomwalk

Did you ever wish you had time to work on all of those “great” ideas floating around in your head? You’d be a millionaire many times over by now — right? Well, now you can put those ideas to work.

Cambrian House is that place. This site uses crowdsourcing to generate ideas, develop and test the code, and — if it’s good enough — put it out into the marketplace. The developers and the original idea person get paid ongoing royalties as the site generates revenue. What a concept!

If you are a coder this is a great way to find the next “YouTube” and be part of the ground-floor efforts and earn cash.

Today’s Dumb Idea – (Surprise, it’s from a politician!)

November 20, 2006 by randomwalk

(AP) WASHINGTON – Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 under a bill the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee says he will introduce next year. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars.

———-

OK – Aside from the fact that this guy Rangel looks WAY TOO much like Al Sharpton for my taste (red alert! red alert!) – this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of…

With a list of fresh guaranteed recruits that can be scaled to any size quickly, it makes it even easier to go to war IMHO. And I’m sure the politicians have ways to “exempt” any family member or friend – just in case.

Call to Action – Net Neutrality Up for Vote

June 27, 2006 by randomwalk

Here’s the latest from the Senate Commerce Committee, where a “mark-up” on several amendments to Senator Stevens’ Telecom Act began today at 10 a.m.: The Snowe-Dorgan Net Neutrality amendment will probably come before the Committee by mid-to-late afternoon. If successfully passed, the amendment would put Net Neutrality language into the massive Telecommunications Act. This is critical.

If your (or your readers’/members’) Senators sit on the committee, they need to hear from you immediately. Ask them to support the Snowe-Dorgan Net Neutrality amendment to the larger Telecom Act (S. 2686).

Here are the members of the committee who have not taken a strong position in favor of Internet freedom and for the Snowe-Dorgan Amendment. Please urge your members to call them now:

Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska)
Phone: 202-224-3004

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)

Tips and Tricks of the Trades

March 21, 2006 by randomwalk

Here is a great site called Tricks of the Trade. Which trade? Any of them. Contributors from all walks of life such as Traveller, Recycler, Guitarist, Hitchhiker, Gardener, Researcher, Bartender, Investor, Travel Writer, Office Worker have all made recent entries.

Here are some interesting tips you can find there:

Singer: “People often get into trouble singing Happy Birthday because they don’t know what key to sing it in, and often start too high. It helps to remember that the first note in Happy Birthday is the lowest note in the song.”

Interrogator: “When interrogating someone, first ask questions you already know the answers to and observe their behavior as they reply. Specifically look at the eyes when they are recalling factual information, such as birth date, previous address, etc. Ask enough of these questions to establish a behavioral norm.

Then move into unknown areas. Look for contrasts in the subject’s behavior, especially the eyes. If the eyes move to the opposite side of the head, this indicates the subject is creating an answer for you. It doesn’t mean it’s a lie though – it could just be an opinion. Choose your questions carefully.”

Misc.: “When you get a new credit card, place a piece of transparent tape over the magnetic strip. The strip will still be readable since it is magnetic, and the tape prevents the strip from getting scratched or rubbed off.”

ZonePlayer: Wireless Streaming Music to Every Room

March 10, 2006 by randomwalk

“The Sonos ZP100 brings great sounding music to any and every room in your house—regardless of where your music collection is stored. And we do mean every room. In fact, you can play the same song or different songs in as many rooms as you’d like, simultaneously.”
Integrates with Rhapsody and Audible.  Little pricey (IMHO) at $499.
